I’m still standing in this wonderful world

There are two songs that I consider anthems for my life – and one is not even an Elton John song, believe it or not!  When I’m feeling especially melancholy or depressed, I listen to What a Wonderful World sung by Louis Armstrong.  It always brings tears to my eyes, and I can usually find the resolve to stop feeling sorry for myself.  [Special thanks to a special friend who made that connection for me].

And when I’ve had a tough row at work, or I’ve just had too many things pulling at me at once, or I feel like the weight of the world has finally been lifted from my shoulders, I pull out I’m Still Standing.

Let’s just say I had one of those weeks this past week (well, actually a few of them), so I thought it was time to bring this tune out again.

Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I’m still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind

And yes, I know this song is about a relationship, but I still appreciate the message.  You can knock me down, but I’ll get right back up again, hopefully stronger.

Love the video, although it is so very 80’s.  Looks like he’s having fun, though.

I’m still standing yeah yeah yeah

[Side note: Can you spot Bruno from Dancing with the Stars in the video?]

Very upbeat in tempo – it’s hard to keep up with the lyrics sometimes – I defy you to not feel better after listening to it.  A great concert tune, too, I’m Still Standing usually inspires those audience members who’ve been seated to get up and have some fun.

I’ve always thought this song was kind of an anthem for EJ, too.  From 1983, when it was first released (and his popularity had waned a bit) until now.  It’s his way of telling people that he’s still here and still relevant.

And it’s my way of telling myself that I’m still here and that I’m still relevant.  With that, as I get ready for another busy week (or two or…), I’m still standing, yeah, yeah, yeah.  And it surely is a wonderful world…
